Freelance Illustration Process
The process of commissioned illustrations is similar among clients. Communication is essential to ensure that clients receive an illustration that matches what they envisioned. Illustrations are created from written descriptions and created mood boards based on the character’s personality and story. Two types are styles are available: cell-shaded & soft-shaded. Prices, timeframe, style, and disclaimers are discussed before the start of work.
Prework
Before creating a refined sketch, thumbnails and a mood board to depict the character’s personality and vibe are created. Thumbnails provide multiple poses, expressions, and moods for the client to choose from or combine. Moodboards or a collection of inspiration can be created by the client or the artist. At times, clients have a clear reference image or idea of their character making prework minimal.
Painting Process
Once the logistics and sketch are approved, the illustrations begin to be rendered. The client receives multiple works in progress during major phases, like linework, flat colors, half-way shading, and full shading. Clients are able to make minor edits through these works of progress. Once the sharing is finished, final touches are made and the final illustration is sent to the client for final approval.
